I'm going to college in the fall and looking into getting a macbook pro. I've heard that they're very good computers with a lot less problems than PCs and that the new line has some upgrades that are worth the money. The problem with Windows is well known. While we can get the same hardware reliability most if not all the problems with the OS comes down to us. We are the problem most of the time. 
We install trojans, we run registry cleaners or tinker with the services. And we don't backup. For the most part, Apple has a fine solution but even that won't help you if you install a trojan. I know this doesn't directly answer the question but let's go with this.
